Bringing State of the Art Geriatric Medicine to Battle Creek
The Senior Diagnostic Center of South Central Michigan (SDC) was selected in July 2006 to become a training campus for Geriatric Medicine by the Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies (KCMS). This exciting news reflects on the excellent resources of Senior Diagnostic Center and the Battle Creek community. The SDC had the privilege of building this Geriatric curriculum from the ground up allowing us to begin with a State of the Art program.
This Geriatric curriculum involves a community wide collaboration. The participants are third year Internal Medicine Residents affiliated with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Each one-month rotation of this Geriatric study involves community wide exposure to relevant issues in Geriatric Medicine.
In order to achieve this goal many organizations host the Resident Physician for one half to four days a month. During that block of time the organizations best trainers / educators spend time with the Physician teaching specific objectives as they relate to the special discipline of the provider. Over the course of the month several key components to a balanced Geriatric education are covered by a diverse group of instructors.
This is an opportunity to acquaint young physicians with our community, with geriatric medicine and encourage them to practice in the greater Battle Creek area. As we bring the best care possible to our local aging population we at the SDC look forward to enhancing this program by attempting to bring two one year geriatric fellowships to Battle Creek. This would be a definite feather in the cap of Battle Creek Medicine as physicians who are currently practicing in other communities would spend a year in Battle Creek learning and practicing Geriatric Medicine. |
